Germany Steps Up Its Support For Ukraine
On Wednesday, May 28th, Germany pledged an additional 5 billion Euros ($5.65 billion) in military aid to Ukraine during a visit from President Zelenskyy, according to Euronews. Chancellor Merz also announced that he would seek Ukraine’s help in jointly developing long-range weapons that will be able to strike deeply into Russia.
After the speech, the defense ministers of Germany and Ukraine signed a memorandum that includes direct investment by Germany into the Ukrainian military-industrial base.
"This is the beginning of a new form of military-industrial cooperation between our countries, which has significant potential," Merz said at a joint press conference with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin.
The Chancellor said the first of these co-developed weapons would be available within weeks for Ukraine’s use, with many additional systems available within 2025. He also said future arms supplies to Kyiv will become confidential.
This recent announcement by Germany is one more step of many proving Europe is serious about taking back responsibility for its own security and securing Ukraine’s sovereignty. The more Europe invests in Ukraine’s and its own security, the less both will be dependent upon our country for military aid. A stronger and more secure Europe will strengthen NATO. Stronger allies like NATO nations are in the security interests of the United States. Every American should welcome a stronger Europe. We applaud the latest announcement from Germany.
